Before bringing home your new puppy, start researching and reading information on training methods to provide your puppy the proper start as a family member and as your new hunting partner. I will provide helpful tips and other information through weekly emails once your puppy is born.
- How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves, Taking Advantage of Early Conditioned Learning – Joan Bailey – I read this book over and over when I start a new puppy to develop in my kennel. Most of it is memorized by now but it is a helpful resource to go back to when starting a bird dog puppy.
- Join a local NAVHDA Chapter – This organization focuses on training a bird dog from a puppy to a finished hunting dog. I have taken many of my puppies through the natural ability test and have learned something each time. I recently finished a dog through their testing system and now have one Versatile Champion in my kennel.
- Gun Dog Magazine – I enjoy reading anything and everything bird dog. There are many articles that may be helpful when training a new puppy or older dog.
- Standing Stone Kennels Training – Great amount of training material here and on their YouTube channel as well. I have watched many of their videos for training.
Here at Buckwood Kennel your puppy will have training and development from 3-9 weeks of age. Our kennel looks to develop puppies at an early age to ensure gentle temperaments and expose puppies to new experiences in a safe environment. After your puppy goes home, we will be here to help answer questions and guide you to having a successful hunting partner. Always happy to help our puppy owners!
