About Us

Our Kennel is just starting up with the addition of potential breeding females. View Our Dogs to watch our females grow. We will be having our first litter this year, 2024.

Hi, my name is Jennifer Kellogg, owner of Buckwood Kennel. I grew up with various hunting dog breeds and have always trained dogs to hunt. Breeds that I had growing up include treeing walker coonhounds, beagles, jack russel terriers, german shorthair pointers, a golden retriever and two brittanys. All of these breeds have their own unique traits and are more pronounced at hunting certain game than others. I greatly enjoy each breed for its unique qualities. My latest hunting dog was a brittany who I trained as an upland hunting dog, but has retired from hunting. As I began to search for another hunting companion, I researched for what I was looking for in a dog. Qualities that are important to me are a strong hunting instinct, highly cooperative, friendly and an off switch in the house. And that’s when I found the Small Munsterlander breed. I spoke with several breeders and got my first Small Munsterlander, Ukon, in February of 2020.

Right from the begining I noticed the calm and sweet temperament of Ukon. But then questioned how good of a hunter could this sweet gentle dog be? Well, from 8 weeks of age that nose was on the ground working. I was taking a walk with Ukon when he was 10 weeks old and on the trail he stopped dead in his tracks and stared at me. There was a small little brush pile near him but I didn’t see anything in it. As I stepped closer out hops a rabbit! He sure had fun chasing his first furred game. Then I introduced him to pigeons at a nearby farm. He was so excited and very birdy! But the best part is when I take him home he calms right down and had that off switch I was looking for. What a wonderful breed! Since he was a puppy, I have progressed him through various trainings and had him take the NAVHDA Natural Ability test when he was 10 months old. He got a maximum score of 112 with a Prize 1. I had thought of breeding Ukon; however, he is monorchid and will not be used for breeding purposes.

Denver and I enjoying a Minnesota hunting trip. Fall 2023.

In August 2021 we got our first potential breeding female from Brush Dale’s OO litter between IntCH Brush Dale’s Every Inch a Lady (Hazel) and HnrCH/IntCH/NatCH Indy Vom Hundegelaut (Indy). Denver is now our foundation dog for our kennel. We are working closely with Michelle Wilbers from Brush Dale Kennel for our breeding program. Denver is a very cooperative dog when hunting in the field and water. She is super calm and absolutely loves other people and dogs. We greatly enjoy Denver and look forward to her future puppies. Our second female also came from Brush Dale Kennel out of   IntCH Brush Dale’s Va Va Voom (Grace) and  IntCH Fuglejaeger D Jixer (Scout). Canyon is a super sweet girl who loves giving people kisses. She expands well in open cover and hunts closer in thick brush.

Our third potential female came from Nebraska. Tundra was such a pretty girl with a lot of hunting drive, but did not meet the breed standard for height and had a little too much energy for the breed. So we decided to not breed Tundra. She is now enjoying her new home with three kids and another Small Munsterlander.

We just acquired two more potential breeding females during summer of 2024. Michelle from Brush Dale Kennels offered her started dog, Nikki to us to help our breeding program. Nikki is out of IntCh Brush Dale’s Heart Stopper (Claire) and VC IntCh Bruah Dale’s Triple Threat (Tito). Nikki has very strong points as a young dog. We look forward to adding these genetics to our kennel. Also, we decided on bringing home a puppy from Denver’s full sister “Annie”. Our fifth potential breeding female was Buckwood’s Brush Dale Zoned In (Terra). Terra is out of Brush Dale’s Over The Moon (Annie) and IntCH Dag Zimni Vrch (Ozzie). Terra was a lovely girl but was a little too shy for what we are looking to keep as a breeding quality female. Terra was rehomed to a wonderful family in winter of 2024.

You can find more information on Denver, Canyon, and Nikki on our dogs page. We will be acquiring more potential breeding females as our kennel grows. The potential females go through our own breeding evaluation. We like to look at a dog as a well rounded dog who excels as a hunting companion and has a wonderful temperament for a loving family member. When deciding on whether to breed a female we have them go through their first hunting season, train for and take the NAVHDA Natural Ability Test, have conformation evaluated at an IABCA dog show, complete the OFA hips/PennHIP, and have testing done for any genetic diseases through Embark. The reason I decided to become a breeder for the Small Munsterlander breed was for my love of this versatile hunting dog and I knew I could make the decisions needed to produce exceptional Small Munsterlanders. Continue the preservation and excellence of the breed!

Our dogs are a huge part of our family! We enjoy their off switches in the house and love taking them hunting. They have also gone with us to pick out Christmas trees, go hiking, go on vacation, go to festivals and one was in our wedding. We love our dogs!
